The coin is there because the barmaid had just demonstrated how you could tell the difference between a Murphy's and a Guinness (beyond assuming they are in their own glasses).
Tap the side of a full glass with a coin, and the two beers emit a very different pitch. If I recall correctly, Guinness is a higher pitch and Beamish is somewhere between Murphy's and Guinness.
I've no idea if this depends on temperature, or any other features, but it held across several repeat readings around Cork. I must try again sometime.
